Mc Neil's Nebula in Orion: the Outburst History
نویسنده
چکیده
We present a sequence of I-band images obtained at the Venezuela 1m Schmidt telescope during the outburst of the nebula recently discovered by J.W. McNeil in the Orion L1630 molecular cloud. We derive photometry spanning the preoutburst state and the brightening itself, a unique record including 14 epochs and spanning a time scale of ∼ 5 years. We constrain the beginning of the outburst at some time between Oct. 28 and Nov. 15, 2003. The light curve of the object at the vertex of the nebula, the likely exciting source of the outburst, reveals that it has brightened ∼ 5 magnitudes in about 4 months. The time scale for the nebula to develop is consistent with the light travel time, indicating that we are observing light from the central source scattered by the ambient cloud into Based on observations obtained at the Llano del Hato National Astronomical Observatory of Venezuela, operated by CIDA for the Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnoloǵıa, and at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory of the Smithsonian Institution, USA Research Associate at SAO, 60 Garden St., Cambridge, MA 02138, USA Postgrado en F́ısica Fundamental, Universidad de los Andes, Mérida, Venezuela Summer Student at CIDA, Mérida, Venezuela

Star Formation in the Orion Nebula I : Stellar Content
The Orion Nebula is one of the most frequently observed nearby (< 1 kiloparsec) star forming regions and, consequently, the subject of a large bibliography of observations and interpretation. The summary in this chapter is bounded spatially by the blister HII region, with sources beyond the central nebula that are part of the same dynamical clustering covered in other chapters in this book. Her...
متن کاملMid-Infrared and Submillimeter Observations of the Illuminating Source of McNeil’s Variable Nebula
We present post-outburst observations of the mid-infrared spectrum and submillimeter continuum of the illuminating source of the newly-discovered McNeil’s Nebula in the L1630 region of Orion. The 12μm flux of this source has increased by a factor of ∼25 after the outburst, whereas the submillimeter continuum remains at its pre-outburst level. The bolometric luminosity has increased by at least ...
متن کاملA Giant Outburst at Millimeter Wavelengths in the Orion Nebula
BIMA observations of the Orion nebula discovered a giant flare from a young star previously undetected at millimeter wavelengths. The star briefly became the brightest compact object in the nebula at 86 GHz. Its flux density increased by more than a factor of 5 on a timescale of hours, to a peak of 160 mJy. This is one of the most luminous stellar radio flares ever observed. Remarkably, the Cha...

We suggest that the Orion A cloud is gravitationally collapsing on large scales, and is producing the Orion Nebula Cluster due to the focusing effects of gravity acting within a finite cloud geometry. In support of this suggestion, we show how an elliptical rotating sheet of gas with a modest density gradient along the major axis can collapse to produce a structure qualitatively resembling Orio...
متن کاملDust in and near the Orion Nebula
Although the blister model for the Orion Nebula is widely accepted, an alternative model, where the optical appearance of the nebula is primarily determined by self-extinction, continues to be considered by some and has never specifically been disproven. I summarize the characteristics of the two models and show that the evidence falls overwhelmingly against the self-extinction model and in fav...
